Today was a super long work day. I was the opener today, so I got to work at 7:50. A few hours later, we had a power surge; the radio and fridges turned off for about a second. "That's weird," I told my co-worker, "it's not stormy or even windy outside." Then, about an hour and a half later, the power turned completely off. We locked the doors and called my manager; it wasn't off for long though, for it turned back on about two minutes later. It turns out that SRP (the power company) had a fire.
Apparently we were the lucky ones. Most business in east Mesa lost their power for hours. Businesses one mile away from us ended up having to close up for the day, but I guess our store got lucky. I got off at four, went home, cleaned my room and put away my laundry, and showered. At 5:55 I got a call from Subway. I figured it was my sister, since she was working there as the pre-closer. It was not my sister...it was the closer, asking me to come in for a couple of hours. Right after I hung up, my manager called me asking me if I would be able to go to that store to work for about an hour or two. I got there ten minutes later...and it was CRAZY. I've never seen so many cars in that parking lot ever! (Most of the businesses in our little strip have shut down.) Since all of the other food places' power had gone out, everyone was coming to us. At one point we had five pieces of bread left, but luckily the rest of our bread finished baking a couple of minutes later. (We ended up running completely out at about 8:00.)
About half an hour after I got there, we were running really low on 1's. Everyone kept paying with stinkin' 2o's, and I had already swapped out as much as I could for our stored 1's. I had to take some money and make an emergency run out the door. The banks were already closed, so I ran down to the salon. They didn't have many ones, because most people there paid with cards. I ran to Filiberto's. He was unable to spare any 1's. From there I ran to Auto Zone. Yay! They swapped out one of my 20's for twenty 1's. Then, I ran to CVS, who could not help me. By then I had a cramp in my ribs...woo...I'm a little out of shape haha. I did not run after that; I power-walked back to Subway.
Here's about half of the strip. (Please excuse the kindergarten writing. It's hard to write using a laptop built-in mousepad.) All of those other businesses inbetween Subway, the salon, and Filiberto's are out of business...sad.
I ended up staying to help close. We almost got everything done; my manager said to do as much prep as we could but to focus on cleaning up. He's going to go in tomorrow a few hours before we open to try to get the store back on schedule. I clocked out at 9:35 and all three of us left at 9:40. I worked 11.66 hours in all.
Long day!
